Two bills sponsored by the NWCUA to improve the Washington Credit Union Act passed out of their respective committees last week in the State Legislature, clearing an early hurdle in the path to passage.
“Consumers want options, which is what companies like Google, Dwolla and Paypal bring to the space,” Jeff Russell told NWCUA Convention-goers during Thursday morning’s general session. “Because a large percentage of earned income from exchange fees, which is declining, credit unions have got to be ready.”
A survey of Washington credit union CEOs revealed 12 interested in offering prize-linked savings programs to members by early 2012. An “Idea Exchange†at the NWCUA’s Convention and Annual Business Meeting will provide more information for industry leaders.
Prize-linked savings accounts have turned un-banked consumers into savers in Michigan. Some Washington credit unions are considering launching similar programs by taking advantage of legislation passed this year. The NWCUA will lobby for a similar law in Oregon next year.
