About the Event

Opportunity Index: Too often it’s your zip code that predetermines your destiny

Following a cocktail and networking hour at Kells Irish Pub, guests will enjoy a fascinating presentation and open dialogue, facilitated by Unitus Community Credit Unions’ SVP, Chief HR Officer, Gayle Evans. Gayle was inspired to learn more about the Opportunity Index after attending a presentation by Harvard researcher, Raj Chetty at Oregon’s 2018 Leadership Summit.

Learn more about groundbreaking research, the Opportunity Atlas (derived from Opportunity Index data), and find out how Oregon and local counties stack up for opportunities compared to national data. Attendees will learn how opportunity is impacted by education, economics, community, and health factors in our population in addition to hearing stories of first-generation college students and discussing ways that we can help improve the opportunity gap in our communities.

“Central to our identity as Americans is a shared belief that no matter how humble your origins, with hard work and perseverance, you can improve your prospects in life and give your children a shot at a secure and productive future. But our American Dream is at risk. Too often it’s your zip code that predetermines your destiny.” – The Opportunity Index

Like previous events before, there will be a donation station at the event in an effort to collect items for
Rose Haven in Portland. Rose Haven is a day shelter and community center serving women, children and gender non-conforming people experiencing trauma, poverty, and physical and mental health challenges.

Please join us in gathering the following donations (all items need to be new and unopened): underwear and socks (for women/children), shampoo, conditioner, razors, pocket tissues, African American hair products, soap, body wash, toothbrushes and toothpaste.

Please RSVP to Toni Mathews or Karen Salman via email (addresses below) by June 10, 2018. To RSVP, to be added to our mailing list, or for more information about the GWLN or our Sister Society, contact one of the Portland/Vancouver Sister Society Leaders:
