Directors' Only Series Track Overview

Advancing the Movement requires credit union boards to adapt and lead through a rapidly evolving environment.

Offered as part of the CU Learning TRAXX program, these six 60- to 90-minute sessions explore foundational skillsets from a timely perspective that strengthen board members’ abilities to lead and serve their credit unions, members, and the broader community.

With programming specifically designed for Directors and CEOs, this track will help directors guide credit unions and the Movement into the future. Sessions will focus on ensuring a future-focused organizational mission and vision, diverse leadership recruitment, evolving organizational strategy, understanding mergers, and more, including just-in-time content to ensure you’re staying ahead of the curve!

During live sessions, attendees will have the opportunity to network with their credit union peers and industry experts on the cutting-edge CU Learning TRAXX digital platform. 6. Understanding Mergers and the Board’s Role***
In this session, we examine how credit unions play an essential part in members’ lives and the board member’s role in credit union mergers. Board members commit countless hours of time and effort to ensure their credit union continues to provide value and benefit. Yet, nearly every day, there is a credit union merger in the United States, with that trend holding steady for nearly a decade. Mergers can be a viable way for credit unions to retain relevance and sustainability while still maintaining focus on the member and remaining true to the credit union’s mission.

Speakers

Dr. Robert Eyler
Dean of the School of Extended and International Education, Sonoma State University 

Dr. Robert Eyler is Dean of the School of Extended and International Education at Sonoma State University. Dr. Eyler is Professor of Economics and Director of the Center for Regional Economic Analysis at Sonoma State University, where he has been teaching since 1995. He earned a Ph.D. from the University of California, Davis in 1998. He earned a B.A. in Economics at CSU, Chico in 1992. Dr. Eyler also serves on the board of directors of Redwood Credit Union, a $7 billion nonprofit financial cooperative.

Dr. Eyler is the author of two books and several academic articles concerning economic sanctions, the economics of the wine industry, and monetary economics. He also provides economic impact analyses for both private firms and public entities to help guide public policy at the local and state level and has been a visiting scholar at both the University of Bologna and Stanford University. 

Michael Daigneault
Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of Quantum Governance

As the CEO of Quantum Governance, Michael brings more than 30 years of training and experience as a consultant, motivational speaker, and dynamic workshop facilitator. With his colleagues and staff, Michael provides a full range of targeted training opportunities in the form of custom seminars, workshops, and retreats, as well as keynote speeches. Michael regularly works with organizations of all types to improve the effectiveness of their governance and leadership. In particular, he has worked with credit unions large and small to advance their governance and strategic efforts, strengthen their boards, and analyze their committee efforts. More than 60 percent of Quantum Governance’s clients are credit unions.

Michael is a nationally-recognized speaker, having presented at conferences including The Credit Union Executives Society, Board Source, The Conference Board, The Ethics Officers Association, and Independent Sector, among others. He is an expert on topics such as governance, ethics, and strategic planning for credit unions, businesses, nonprofits, associations, and governmental entities. He has published articles on these topics for a wide variety of trade journals and magazines, including CU Magazine, CU Update, Association Management, The Audit Report, BoardMember Magazine, Catalyst, and Executive Update, to name a few.

Michael is a three-time graduate of Georgetown University, holding a B.A. from the College in Philosophy where he was the top graduate in Philosophy; a J.D. from the Law Center; and a Master’s Degree in Law from the Law Center. He was the first person to graduate from the Law Center with a Masters in Law with a concentration in Legal Ethics and Professional Responsibility.

Monica Davy
Director of the Office of Minority and Women Inclusion, NCUA

Monica Hughes Davy is the Director of the Office of Minority and Women Inclusion. As Director, Ms. Davy oversees the requirements of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of 2010 involving diversity, civil rights and the promotion of minority and women hiring and contracting practices throughout the credit union industry and at the NCUA. 

Prior to joining the NCUA, Ms. Davy served as Executive Director of the Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion at the Internal Revenue Service. She also served as Acting Director of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Office of Equal Employment Opportunity and Diversity Management, and as Acting Director and a senior trial attorney at the Department of Health and Human Services. 

Ms. Davy holds degrees from the Howard University School of Law and George Mason University. 

Tim Harrington
President, TEAM Resources

Tim Harrington is a Certified Public Accountant who has consulted with financial institutions since 1992. Since 1996, Tim has been President of TEAM Resources, a firm that provides consulting, strategic planning and training to financial institutions from coast-to-coast. He is the author of the popular the book Eisenhower on Enlightened Leadership and co-author of Credit Union Guide to Strategic Governance. Tim is a faculty member of two national credit union schools on governance and management, and has spoken to hundreds of thousands of directors, executive management and staff throughout the Northern Hemisphere.

DeeDeeDeedee Myers
Chief Executive Officer, DDJ Myers

Deedee is known for being a thought and practice leader in the field of transformative change and organizational evolution for people and organizations. Her work with boards, executive teams, and staff inspire organizations to adopt evolutionary yet pragmatic communication and behavioral practices that add sustainable and intrinsic value. Myers is widely known for evolutionary strategic planning, deep-seated succession planning from the emerging leader through the board level, generative board practices, and advancing leadership presence and execution so that individuals, teams, and organizations can access untapped potential. She contributes to advancing leadership through frequent speaking engagements, articles, and blogs.

Myers has a master’s degree in organizational development, a Ph.D. in human development, a master’s level in somatic coaching, and a PCC in coaching from the International Coaching Federation. 

Rocky Ozaki
Founder & CEO, NoW of Work, Inc. 

Ozaki is the Founder & CEO of the NoW of Work Inc. – a business transformation firm whose primary focus is helping executives build future-proofed, resilient organizations that are anchored on cultures of innovation and agility. He couples a decade of senior leadership roles in large enterprise, with 5-years in start-up tech to form what he believes is the DNA for companies to survive in our exponential (and highly uncertain) times. 

Jeff Rendel 
Certified Speaking Professional

Jeff Rendel, Certified Speaking Professional, knows financial services. With experience as a federal banking regulator, financial services executive, and Congressional lobbyist; he understands the balancing act of safety, soundness, sales, and strategy.

As President of Rising Above Enterprises, Rendel works with financial services providers that want entrepreneurial results in sales, service, and strategy. Each year, he addresses and facilitates for nearly 100 financial institutions and their business partners.

As a federal banking regulator with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, Rendel examined a wide array of the nation’s banks and partnered with all levels of executive management. 

As a financial services executive, he oversaw the strategic operations of a community bank, directing corporate initiatives and helping guide the bank to record growth, market share, and financial results.

As a chief lobbyist to Congress, he represented financial institutions, serving as a first and main resource to Members of Congress as they sought to understand implications of legislation upon financial services.

A highly sought after and accomplished speaker; he is a professional member of the National Speakers Association (NSA) and has earned the NSA’s Certified Speaking Professional (CSP) designation. Fewer than two percent of the world’s speakers hold this achievement. 

Niki Sharma
Vice-Chair, VanCity Credit Union Board of Directors and Lawyer 

Niki Sharma is a lawyer, former chair of the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation and life-long advocate for social justice and sustainability. She is deeply committed to reconciliation, gender equity, supporting arts and culture and strengthening local communities. Sharma is a proud member of VanCity and believes strongly in co-operative values.  

Sharma’s legal practice focuses on aboriginal law and her work has taken her across British Columbia and northern Canada. She represents residential school survivors and works closely with First Nation governments. She has advocated for her clients on many levels of the legal system, including the Supreme Court of Canada. 

In 2011, Sharma was elected as a Vancouver Park Board commissioner, where she served as chair of the board and oversaw a $100 million dollar budget on behalf of taxpayers. As a commissioner, she was co-chair of the environmental stewardship and education task force, the local food task force and led the Park Board’s opposition to the Kinder Morgan pipeline expansion plan. She spearheaded the Pollinator Project to use the park system to protect bees and other pollinators. She also acted as liaison to the urban aboriginal advisory committee, the women’s advisory committee and the arts and culture policy council. 

Earlier in her career, Sharma worked internationally with a women’s co-operative in Ecuador to promote financial independence and forest preservation. She also served as a parliamentary intern with the Parliamentary Monitoring Group in Cape Town, South Africa, where she reported on meetings of the South African parliament. 

In Canada, she received the Premier’s Award for Collaboration from the government of Northwest Territories for her work in a committee to develop new wildlife legislation. 

Currently, Sharma serves as a board member for Battered Women’s Support Services and the PuSH Festival. She is a member of the City of Vancouver’s women’s advisory committee and chaired the pay-equity sub-committee. 

Sharma was born and raised in a small town in the Rocky Mountains of B.C. and now resides in east Vancouver with her husband and their young daughter.
