Credit unions across the Northwest are tracking their community development, lending, social responsibility, charitable giving, volunteerism, and more through the Community Impact Reporting Tool (CIRT).
Telling the Northwest Credit Union Collective Impact Story
In 2019, NWCUA launched the Community Impact Reporting Tool (CIRT), and the vast majority of Northwest credit unions participated, entering their important give-back data. That information further pushed the Northwest Credit Union Movement’s collective “People Helping People” story. As part of that effort, NWCUA created three state reports illustrating credit unions’ impact, which credit unions shared with lawmakers.
NWCUA also took the stories credit unions shared to create downloadable documents and videos. Those may be found below.
CIRT Data Collection Open Now!
Starting Sept. 28, NWCUA will reach out to its member credit unions to begin 2019/2020 data collection, which will include showcasing credit unions’ outstanding COVID-19 community and member impact. Data and stories will be collected throughout the month of October.
On Dec. 2, at 3:30 p.m. PST, 4:30 p.m. MST, we will celebrate Northwest credit unions’ outstanding work during this year’s reimagined virtual awards ceremony, “Celebrating U,” An Online Gala Recognizing Credit Unions’ Extraordinary Service. More details will be shared soon!

What is CIRT?
CIRT is a customized survey developed for the specific purpose of collecting data and stories that capture how Northwest credit unions support and invest in their communities. The data and stories credit unions share are essential in advocating on behalf of the Credit Union Movement with lawmakers.
Why was it important to develop CIRT?
Every day, credit unions actively support and invest in their communities. These efforts exemplify the “People Helping People” philosophy of the Credit Union Movement and reflect the spirit of credit union leaders and staff. As not-for-profit financial cooperatives, giving back to the community is part of the DNA of credit unions.
CIRT is important because so much of this constant and sincere community-related activity is undocumented and thus unrecognized by a significant segment of the general public and by elected officials and policy makers. CIRT gives all of this activity a louder voice in the form of important measurable data we can use to communicate the significant impact credit unions have on the communities they serve.
Who can use CIRT?
CIRT is free to all NWCUA credit union members via a customized online survey.
What data points are being collected?
CIRT collects a variety of data that reflects community development, giving, investing, lending, social responsibility, volunteerism, and member impact stories and images. Currently NWCUA is collecting credit unions’ 2019 data and stories, as well as information on credit unions’ 2020 COVID-19 relief efforts. This is a snapshot of the many data points CIRT captures:

How are data points collected?
Data points are collected in two primary ways:
- Imported from external sources: To reduce the data entry burden on member credit unions, some data already reported by credit unions to other entities (such as Call Report data) is directly gathered from those entities, as well as from other credit union system partners; and
- Manual entry from the credit union: Some data is entered manually by the credit union via a simple online survey.
What is the long-term vision or use for this tool?
Over time, CIRT will be updated and evolve according to the needs of both individual members and NWCUA in their roles as collective representatives and staunch advocates of Northwest credit unions. Although it is not anticipated that the core purpose of CIRT will change, it is naturally expected that the system scope, ability, and ease of collecting data will gradually improve as member users provide constructive feedback and partner with NWCUA to ensure this tool is serving its users in the most efficient and effective manner.
