Wauna Credit Union Earns Juntos Avanzamos Designation

When it comes to serving the needs of diverse communities, credit unions truly shine. It’s a critical component of the not-for-profit cooperative structure that makes these financial institutions stand out from the crowd.

Wauna Credit Union (WCU), based in Clatskanie, Oregon, announced this month that it has become a Juntos Avanzamos credit union, a designation awarded to credit unions that demonstrate a commitment to serving and empowering Hispanic and immigrant consumers by providing safe, affordable, and relevant financial services.

The program is specifically designed to better support the Hispanic community by recognizing credit unions that provide specialized products and services, such as bilingual staffing, translation services, non-citizen lending, and more.

“WCU has been serving the Hispanic community for years, and one day it just made sense to reach out to Inclusiv about securing this designation,” said Michael Murdoch, Marketing Manager at WCU. “We’ve looked up to many pioneers in these initiatives amongst credit unions in the Portland area — it was time for us to better feature these invaluable services for our Hispanic communities in and around our footprint,” said Murdoch.

The credit union is well-known in the area for providing financial education, investment support, lending products, and other relevant financial offerings to local Hispanic populations. It also further drives inclusion efforts by partnering with numerous Hispanic-support organizations in its community, including Adelante Mujeres and Consejo Hispano.

“If the credit union is failing to serve any individual for any reason, we need to correct that immediately,” said WCU President and CEO Robert Blumberg. “As long as we are consistently living our mission and discovering new ways to help people, then we are on the right path,” he said.

Launched in 2005, Juntos Avanzamos (which translates to “Together We Advance”) is led by Inclusiv, a certified CDFI intermediary that aims to transform local progress into lasting national change. WCU joins 112 Juntos Avanzamos-designated credit unions in 27 different states throughout the county, eight of which are headquartered in Oregon.
