Red Canoe Awards $31,000 in Scholarships

Red Canoe Credit Union has awarded $28,000 in college scholarships to high school students and adults wishing to further their education this fall.

Red Canoe’s scholarship program was created in the memory of Wally C. Ohlfs, the founding manager of the credit union. After founding Red Canoe while working for Weyerhaeuser Company, Wally served as the credit union’s manager/President from its inception in 1937 until 1975 and was a tireless advocate for the credit union industry.

The Wally Ohlfs Scholarship Program is available to graduating high school seniors who have maintained a cumulative high school GPA of 3.0 or higher, and any adults returning to college or beginning their higher education.  Six students were awarded $4,000 each in this year’s essay contest.

In addition to the Wally Ohlfs scholarships, Red Canoe also offers the Brenda Godfrey/Jack Elms scholarship program, which awards one $4,000 scholarship annually to members who are entering or are enrolled in a graduate school. This scholarship honors two individuals who were an important part of Cowlitz Credit Union, which merged with Red Canoe in 2014. Brenda Godfrey was a long-time employee of CCU who lost her life to cancer. Jack Elms was a dedicated Board Member of CCU for over 20 years.
