Meet Jessica Johnson, the 2021 Emerging Leaders Scholarship Recipient

The 2021 Virtual Emerging Leaders Program kicks off in just a few weeks, and passionate credit union professionals are ready to jump in and learn the skills they need to become stronger, more effective leaders in the Credit Union Movement.
Every year, candidates compete for the Emerging Leaders Scholarship Contest, sponsored by Strategic Link, for a chance to win tuition-free registration to the program. Judges from NWCUA and DDJ Myers evaluate and score each nomination based on their submission materials, phone interview responses, reason for wanting to attend the Emerging Leaders Program, as well as the potential benefit of the program to the applicant’s career and credit union.
The 2021 scholarship winner is Jessica Johnson, AVP, Legal & Compliance at Numerica Credit Union, headquartered in Spokane.
Recently, Anthem caught up with Johnson to learn more about what she hopes to get out of the program.
Anthem: What made you want to participate in Emerging Leaders this year?
Johnson: Leadership is something that I’m passionate about, and I’ve been actively investing in my personal development and growth as a leader so that I can better serve my team and Numerica. Emerging Leaders is something that I saw as the next step for me, because of the focus on strategic leadership skills and innovative solutions.
Anthem: In what specific ways do you hope the program will help you grow your career?
Johnson: I hope to grow my executive presence and ability to do more visionary and strategic thinking with the skills I will learn through this program. I want to tap into my full potential as a leader, and benefit my organization by helping dream up creative solutions to real problems that we face today.
Anthem: What’s the best part about the Credit Union Movement and the role you play in it?
Johnson: The “People Helping People” philosophy is by far my favorite thing about the Credit Union Movement. This aligns with my personal commitment to those who I have the privilege to lead. I strive to work alongside those on my team, and to help eliminate barriers to their success. That’s what credit unions are all about too — helping people by enhancing their lives, and fulfilling their dreams! There is nothing sweeter than having a member come back and tell you that you helped them overcome a hardship they encountered, or that you helped make their dream a reality. Our front line staff does this every single day, and my role is to help eliminate their barriers so that they can serve members more effectively.
This year’s program begins May 18 and runs through Feb. 15, 2022. Participants will meet virtually 10 times throughout the next several months and have plenty of opportunities for valuable engagement, including one-on-one coaching sessions, interactive group learning sessions, “buddy” calls, group discussion boards, and much more.
