O Bee Credit Union Raises $50,000 for Charity Through Popular Brewhouse Masks and T-Shirts
The donations went to eight area nonprofits focused on helping individuals impacted by the pandemic.
This year, O Bee Credit Union, based in Lacey, Washington, donated more than $50,000 to local charitable organizations through its creative “Masks-for-Charity” initiative and brewhouse T-shirt donations.
Watching COVID-19 disrupt so many lives in its community this year, O Bee was determined to find more ways to help. The credit union was already raising money for local organizations through its popular brewhouse T-shirts, which were offered to members in exchange for a $20 donation. So when the state-wide mask mandate went into effect, O Bee had an idea.
“We thought, why not offer our iconic Olympia, Rainier, and Pabst beer logos on masks in exchange for a small donation,” said Lee Wojnar, the credit union’s Vice President of Marketing. “The response was overwhelming. The masks were wildly popular. People were happy to donate. Now the masks are practically collectors’ items because they sell out so quickly.”
According to Wojnar, O Bee raised more money in six months through mask donations than it did over two years with its popular brewery T-shirts. So far, the masks brought in about $30,000 and T-shirts $20,000. Wojnar said many people offered well over the $5 suggested contribution.
O Bee began then allocated the funds to community organizations focused on helping those impacted by the pandemic, including:
- Thurston County Food Bank & Nourish Pierce County
- Family Support Services
- Little Red Schoolhouse
- Homeless Backpacks
- Wildfire Relief Fund
- Family Education and Support Services
- Community Youth Services
- Olympia-Tumwater Foundation
O Bee gives credit for much of this success to the generosity of its members. Without the support and enthusiasm of the community it would not be possible to have raised so much so quickly. The fundraising continues and most branches have some of the masks and shirts still available, including sizes and designs for children.
