Northwest Credit Unions Spread Holiday Cheer with Community Giveback
December 7, 2020
All year long, Northwest credit unions gave back to their communities. Now they’re in the holiday spirit, bringing cheer to members and community partners through giveaways, social media contests, fundraisers, and more.
Maps Credit Union — 9 Days of Giveaways
Maps kicked off its Nine Days of Giveaways on Dec. 1, choosing a new small business in the Mid-Willamette Valley of Oregon to support through each of the nine days. Here’s how it works: for every purchase made at the spotlighted small business each day, consumers get a freebie in return. The campaign started with Gear-Up Coffee Shop in Silverton. With every purchase, consumers received a dozen mini donuts. The fun continued on Dec. 2 with Luis’s Taqueria, in Woodburn, except this time, consumers who purchased takeout from the local Mexican restaurant were given $10 gift cards. Over the next few days, Maps supported a local sub shop and a handful of other cafes, documenting the series on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
OnPoint Community Credit Union — Social Giving Campaign
OnPoint also kicked off its holiday social giving campaign at the beginning of the month. From Dec. 1–11, OnPoint’s social media followers can select six Portland-area organizations to receive donations from the credit union by following/liking OnPoint and sharing the nonprofit they support. Participants can vote through the credit union’s social media channels by tagging OnPoint and using the #OnPointGiving hashtag or commenting on one of its social media posts. One grand prize winner will receive $5,000, and the next closest five organizations will each receive $2,500. So far, OnPoint has more than 3,100 entries!
East Idaho Credit Union — Coins for Christmas
Over the past 30 years, East Idaho Credit Union has made an effort to help put shoes on the feet of local children in Idaho through Kicks for Kids and Coins for Christmas. This year, EICU’s Coins for Christmas fundraiser runs from Nov. 18 to Dec. 18. Unlike past years, there are no coin jugs to collect spare change in schools, but several schools have opted to utilize the new virtual fundraiser through the Kicks for Kids website, offering more accessibility and convenience.
TwinStar Credit Union — Zoom with Santa
TwinStar Credit Union’s Community Foundation is raising funds for a good cause through fun Santa Zoom chats for kids. Those who make a $50 donation and schedule a Zoom chat will directly help children in need of healthy meals in Washington. The credit union has four jolly Santas available for a Zoom visit, including a Spanish-speaking Saint Nick. Chats are available Dec. 18 through Dec. 24, and all of the funds go to feed youth in the areas that the credit union serves. Visit the fundraiser online to learn more.
These are just a few of the ways credit unions are giving back this holiday season. Want to share what #CreditUnionGood your credit union is doing? We’d love to hear all about it — email us!
