Strong showing at Pierce County Legislative Event

Members of the Pierce County Chapter of Credit Unions recently hosted a successful event with eight state legislators joining local credit union representatives on International Credit Union Day. The group held the annual event virtually for the first time due to COVID-19 restrictions.

According to the chapter’s board chair Mark Minickiello of Harborstone Credit Union, the board was unsure whether or not to proceed with the online event given the pandemic but forging ahead “helped us maintain the broader continuity of our advocacy efforts and showed the success of and importance of continuing to develop relationships at the local level.”

Participants included Speaker of the House Laurie Jinkins (D-Tacoma), House Republican Minority Leader J.T. Wilcox (R-Yelm), and Chair of the House Consumer Protection and Business Committee Rep. Steve Kirby (D-Tacoma) among others from the 2nd, 25th, 26th, 27th, and 29th Legislative Districts.

Legislators shared their insights as to what pressing items they must tackle in the upcoming session, their appreciation of the way that credit unions have stepped up in a major way to serve the needs of their members during this incredibly challenging time, and Rep. Wilcox shared his personal appreciation and respect for the strong advocacy work credit unions and their grassroots advocacy network do to connect with their local officials.

This comes on the heels of another successful virtual legislative event held by the Southwest Washington Chapter of Credit Unions in September that had nine state legislators attend and great turnout from local chapter members.
