First Tech Federal Credit Union and Adelante Mujeres Hope to Inspire With New Makerspace

Adelante Mujeres recently unveiled a plaque at its new Makerspace to recognize First Tech’s support of the Chicas Youth Development Program. The new space is designed to inspire Latina girls to explore science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM). First Tech is proud to support the next generation of thinkers, leaders, and doers through an amazing community of partners like Adelante Mujeres and the work they do to educate and empower youth in the local community.

“First Tech’s Capital Campaign support of $35,000 for the Chicas Makerspace is helping Latina girls cultivate a maker mindset,” says Angela Valenzuela, Chicas Youth Development Advocate at Adelante Mujeres.

“As our girls look to pursue futures in STEAM education and careers, the Chicas Makerspace, one of the first Latina-only STEAM spaces, is designed to encourage our youth to familiarize themselves with basic STEAM tools like 3D printers, button makers, and screen printers,” Valenzuela adds. “First Tech’s funding has helped open doors for the Latina youth in our program to have access to STEAM tools they wouldn’t otherwise have experience with. This will have a great impact on the 42% of Latina youth in the Chicas program that go on to study STEAM-related fields in higher education.”
