Sterling Nielsen, CEO of Mountain America Credit Union, Named CUES 2019 Outstanding Chief Executive
Nielsen helped steer the credit union during the Great Recession; has grown assets to nearly $9 billion.
Sterling Nielsen, President and CEO of Mountain America Credit Union, was just named 2019 Outstanding Chief Executive by the Credit Union Executive Society.
The award recognizes credit union CEOs who have provided exemplary service and made outstanding contributions to strengthen their credit union and the industry.
“Sterling has the unique ability to see the big picture, set vision and direction for the credit union, and successfully execute his plan,” says Scott Burt, Mountain America Credit Union Board Chairman. “He is humble yet strong, and treats people with dignity and respect and is well-respected in the credit union industry and the community.”
Since taking the reins, Nielson has led the credit union through the Great Recession and achieved significant growth in subsequent years, CUES noted.
Mountain America, headquartered in Sandy, Utah, also serves members throughout the Boise area. In 2013, Nielsen unveiled an ambitious, 10-year, $10 billion plan, which allowed the credit union to grow at an average of 17.39% from 2016 to 2018. With approximately $9 billion in assets, the credit union is on track to achieve the $10 billion goal nearly two years ahead of schedule.
Nielsen believes in hiring and retaining the best talent possible and ensuring team members are engaged. During his tenure as CEO, he has introduced new programs, as well as enhanced existing ones, to ensure employees can develop and grow.
In addition, he’s committed to helping others in the community. He currently serves on the Western CUNA Management School Board of Trustees, the Utah Credit Union Association Board of Directors, the Kem Gardner Policy Institute Advisory Board, the CU Direct Board, and the Hale Centre Theatre Board of Trustees.
Nielsen will be honored at CUES’ CEO/Executive Team Network event on Nov. 5 in Amelia Island, Florida.
In 2013, Kent Oram, President and CEO of Idaho Central Credit Union, was also honored with the award.
