WA Governmental Affairs Committee Summary
August 5, 2019
As with the Idaho Governmental Affairs committee meeting in late July, the Washington State Governmental Affairs Committee just held their third quarter meeting for 2019. We had the great pleasure of welcoming State Senator Mark Mullet, D-Issaquah, Chair of he Senate Financial Institutions, Economic, and Trade Committee. His candor and insights on the upcoming legislative session were greatly appreciated as he answered questions from committee members. We wish to extend our great appreciation for his attendance.
Among other topics in focus for the meeting were ongoing public funds discussions and HB 1247 rulemaking on parity provision with an encouragement for committee members to familiarize with other state Credit Union Acts across the country. We also heard a report back about the recent SAFE Banking Act hearings of keen interest to Washington’s credit unions as they navigate the unique challenges associated with cannabis banking.
Just as we were meeting, we also received news that just down the street from our meeting, Washington State House Democrats elected Laurie Jinkins, D-27th Legislative District to be Speaker of the House. Nominated by her peers, she will become the first woman to serve as Speaker of the House in the state’s history.
The Washington Governmental Affairs Committee continues to be a dynamic forum for discussing important credit union issues both at the state and federal levels. We greatly look forward to our next meeting and appreciate the continued engagement from committee members.
