Two Northwest Credit Unions Recognized at CUNA’s Human Resources and Organizational Development Council Awards

Two Northwest credit unions were recognized at the CUNA 2019 HR and Organizational Development Council Conference in April. Top credit union staff exemplifying excellence in human resources and training and the promotion of credit union philosophies through leadership were honored at the Council’s awards ceremony.
Debbie Schorzman, HR Generalist at Seattle-based Verity Credit Union, was named 2019 Rising Star Winner for her inclusive leadership, extensive recruitment, volunteer activity, and engagement in the local community and with other credit unions nationally. Washington-based iQ Credit Union was honored for its management practices entry, “Seek the PhysiQue.”
“The programs and initiatives championed by these winners truly exemplify the best of HR and organizational development within the credit union industry,” said Council Awards and Recognition Committee Chair and Northwest Credit Union Association Senior Vice President Administration and Governance Affairs, Jennifer Huggard. “They made a remarkable impact on their credit unions and their members.”
Horizon Credit Union Raises $15,000 for Credit Unions for Kids
Horizon Credit Union’s 20 branches got into the spirit of giving with its annual Credit Unions for Kids campaign, offering balloons, mugs, desserts, and Italian sodas in exchange for donations. The Washington-based credit union worked with its members to raise $15,237 — a 14 percent increase over the previous year — that was distributed as follows:
- Children’s Miracle Network Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital (funds raised in Washington and Idaho branches) – $10,120
- CMN Shodair Children’s Hospital (funds raised at three Montana branches) – $2,117
- Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital Hope for the Holidays Program – $3,000
Sound Credit Union names new marketing and HR leaders
Sound Credit Union has named Ryan Zilker as Vice President of Marketing, and Derrick Borgmann as Vice President of Talent Management. Zilker brings more than 24 years of experience in credit union and marketing roles, including branch and call center positions, lending, operations, and market research. Most recently, Zilker served as the head of marketing for a trade association representing fresh fruit, vegetable, and nut farmers.
Zilker will focus on positioning the Washington-based Sound Credit Union as a community partner and advocate. He hopes to expand the credit union’s footprint to include even more potential members and to further expand its position as a trusted partner within the communities it serves.
Borgmann most recently served as a regional director of stores for a Northwest bubble tea company before coming to Sound. Borgmann’s expertise includes HR and operations, talent acquisition, process/policy development, strategic planning, and cultural development.
Borgmann has a passion for understanding what makes the work place a positive environment for employees and will focus on developing a consistent, transparent culture of employee engagement across the organization.
