Oregon Spring GAC Meeting

The Advocacy team was pleased to join the Oregon Governmental Affairs Committee Spring Meeting on May 9, 2019.

The committee was delighted to host Sandra McDonough, President and CEO of Oregon Business and Industry (OBI). She expressed strong support for continued partnership and encouraged credit unions in Oregon to be engaged in their local chamber of commerce as well as a continued presence on OBI committees.

The Governmental Affairs Committee heard reports on recent efforts in Oregon in the current legislative session including recent tax proposal discussions in the state legislature. Pam Leavitt, Policy Advisor Oregon State Advocacy and Grassroots  shared a number of state legislative bills in progress and the importance of continuing to build and leverage relationships with elected officials.

We also had the opportunity to hear from members of the Advocacy team on various federal legislative items and regulatory updates. In all, the message was clear; credit unions need to be prepared and have a unified voice on state and federal issues. Troy Stang, CEO of the NWCUA shared that we must also be utilizing the Community Impact Reporting Tool to capture the value credit unions are bringing back to their communities.

Finally, we were thankful to have two members of Senator Ron Wyden’s staff with us during lunch and appreciative of the credit union leaders that stayed through lunch to discuss what credit unions are doing to serve business needs in their communities particularly for business owners that have difficulty obtaining loans from traditional banks. The discussion was informative and we look forward to continued partnership with Senator Ron Wyden and his team.
