Gilfedder succeeds Elliot Gregg, who will step down after 19 years of service in January.
Shawn Gilfedder, a credit union leader known for member-focused service, financial wellness, and community involvement has been named Kitsap Credit Union’s new President and CEO.
Gilfedder, the former President and CEO of McGraw-Hill Federal Credit Union in New Jersey, assumed the role at the Bremerton, Washington-based credit union on Oct. 1, succeeding Elliot Gregg, who steps down after 19 years of service in January.
Gilfedder brings extensive experience with financial institutions, capital markets, commercial banking, and the use of strategic digital channels to enhance the member experience. He also brings a forward-looking perspective on financial health initiatives, which he hopes will benefit the Kitsap CU’s member communities.
“I am passionate about providing our members and communities access to financial education,” said Gilfedder. “I know Kitsap Credit Union has a strong presence throughout many of our local schools and communities with education geared toward financial wellness. My goal is to build on that.”
During his time at McGraw-Hill FCU, Gilfedder led the credit union through transformative campaigns, growing membership by more than 100 percent, and increasing assets by 150 percent while shaping a vision to improve the financial wellness of its membership. He launched the VOICE Foundation for the credit union’s charitable activities, which has raised over $700,000 since its inception.
Gregg, who was named President Emeritus, commented on Gilfedder’s dedication and passion for credit unions saying, “It has been gratifying to learn of Shawn’s deep commitment to credit unions and share my insights into our unique credit union and (member) communities.”
A champion of financial wellness on the local and national levels, Gilfedder has been featured in the New York Daily News, U.S. News and World Report, The Wall Street Journal, and ABC News’ Good Morning America, where he has touted the benefits of financial education and wellness for consumers. He also served as a task force member of CUNA’s government-sponsored enterprise housing reform initiatives, and on the New Jersey Credit Union League Board.
“Shawn’s visionary and creative approach to leading is a perfect match for our credit union,” said Kitsap Credit Union’s Board of Directors Vice Chair, Susan Baker. “We are confident that Shawn will propel the credit union to new heights while honoring its rich history.”
During Gregg’s time as President and CEO, he expanded Kitsap CU’s branch footprint to 16 locations and tripled assets from just under $400 million to $1.2 billion. He led the credit union with community impact always in mind. It resulted in several honors, including winning several Credit Union National Association Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility and Louise Herring in Philosophy in Action awards, community service recognition by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and the 2014 Department of the Navy “Credit Union of the Year.”
In addition to leading Kitsap CU and supporting numerous community initiatives in the counties the credit union serves, Gregg is a former member of the Northwest Credit Union Association (NWCUA) Board of Directors.
