NWCUA’s Credit Unions for Kids Auction Goes Green with Electric Cars

Last year’s Credit Unions for Kids Auction at MAXX was a big success.

“New York, New York,” the annual Credit Unions for Kids auction at MAXX Convention, is “going green” this year, replacing Red Flyer Wagons with electric cars. The event raises hundreds of thousands of dollars each year for Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) hospitals.

For decades, Northwest credit unions generously engaged in friendly bidding wars to donate Red Flyer Wagons to the hospitals. The toy-filled wagons were used to transport patients from their rooms to medical appointments, bringing cheer to nervous kids at a difficult time.

That tradition is being modernized this year as a sleek fleet of electric cars rolls out for the kids.

“These electric cars will give kids a cool ride to their appointments, that is, if they can wrestle the remote controls away from me,” Troy Stang, Northwest Credit Union Association (NWCUA) President and CEO said. On a more serious note, Stang said, competitive bidding on a set of wheels for each hospital is a signature pillar of the annual auction.

Electric car for kids

What young child would turn down the chance to drive this rig to a medical appointment? Eight electric cars will be auctioned off at the Credit Unions for Kids Auction on Oct. 17 at MAXX.

“This year we have one remote-controlled car available for each of the CMN hospitals in the Northwest thanks to the generosity of our sponsors,” Holly Miller, NWCUA Project Manager and Auction Coordinator said. “Each sponsored car will be auctioned off, raising thousands and thousands of dollars more for the kids. We’ll roll them into the hospitals filled with toys, and we’ll present a check to each hospital for their portion of the proceeds we will raise at New York, New York.”

Electric cars have already been well received by medical teams and hospitalized children at Springfield, Ore.-based PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center. Patients drive their way into the operating room and forget to be afraid.

“There’s nothing like telling a kid who may not have this kind of great toy at home, ‘Hey, how would you like to ride in our black Range Rover?’ What young kid is going to say no to that?” Pediatric Surgeon Dr. Kim Ruscher asked.

Sponsors of the electric cars for each hospital include:

  • NorthQuest Realty and Northwest Community Credit Union – Asante Rogue Medical Center
  • USAgencies Credit Union – Doernbecher Children’s Hospital
  • Mountain America Credit Union – Intermountain Primary Children’s Hospital
  • Oregon Community Credit Union – PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center

  • Numerica Credit Union – Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital
  • Inspirus Credit Union – Seattle Children’s Hospital
  • Pioneer Federal Credit Union – St. Luke’s Children’s Hospital
  • Solarity Credit Union –Virginia Mason Memorial Hospital

It remains to be seen which credit union or groups of credit unions will win the bid on each of the cars, but at last year’s NWCUA auction, one of the Red Flyer Wagons alone generated a bid of $23,000.

“We’re hopeful the credit unions put the pedal to the metal and cross the finish line in style for the kids,” said Miller.

The auction takes place Wed., Oct. 17, during the NWCUA’s annual MAXX Convention in Tacoma.
