The 2018–2019 World Council Board of Directors (Seated from left) George Ototo, Steven Stapp (Chair), Brian McCrory, Diana Dykstra (Treasurer/Chair, Audit & Risk Management Committee) (Standing from left) Jaime Chavez Suarez, Carla Cicero, Rafał Matusiak (Vice Chair/Secretary), Aaron Moses, Dallas Bergl, Manfred Dasenbrock, Martha Durdin, (Chair of the Governance and Elections Committee), Michael Lawrence, Kevin Sitka, and Younsik Kim.

Steven Stapp, President/CEO of Portland-based Unitus Community Credit Union, was recently elected Chair of the World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU) Board of Directors. Stapp took office July 17 during WOCCU’s General Conference in Singapore.

“Although I come from the U.S., I consider myself a global ambassador of credit unions – a servant of the people,” Stapp said. “World Council and the work of those that have gone before us have brought us together. We must not forget that we drink the water from the well that others have dug, but now is our time to take this work forward.”

The challenge, Stapp noted, is for credit unions to stand together and be counted.

“We have the world to show that financial cooperatives provide a path for prosperity and independence through a democratic process,” Stapp remarked.

Another Northwest leader continuing service on the WOCCU Board of Directors is Carla Cicero, President/CEO of Numerica Credit Union in Spokane.

Cicero has been very active in her leadership role for WOCCU and recently helped raise funds for a campaign to protect young girls in the Busia orphanage in Western Kenya from sexual predators.

“Congratulations to Steven as he assumes the role of Chair, and to Carla as she continues to serve on the Board for the World Council,” said Troy Stang, President and CEO of the Northwest Credit Union Association. “The Northwest Credit Union Movement is grateful for all of the leaders in this region who are serving credit unions worldwide. Through their exchange programs, visits, shared technology and more, this ambassadorship promotes cooperative credit unions for all consumers.”

Editor’s note: It’s a busy summer for Northwest supporters of the World Council. Look for continuing coverage in Anthem of Credit Union Exchanges taking place in the region next month, and more information about Carla Cicero’s project in Kenya.
