St. Helens Community Credit Union Donates to Local High Schools
A new program allows members to support their local schools.
Last year, as the 2017/2018 school year began, St. Helens, Oregon-based St. Helens Community Credit Union initiated its new Team Up for Schools donation campaign. The goal of the campaign focused on encouraging members to acquire and use one of three local high school-themed debit cards for their everyday purchases and transactions. Each debit card is designed with a local school’s colors, name, and image, including the Rainier Columbians, Scappoose Indians, and St. Helens Lions. Over the past nine months, whenever St. Helens Community members used those cards, the credit union donated five cents to area high schools.
The campaign was a huge success as members have helped raise more than $21,000 for the three high schools. Recently, St. Helens Community President and CEO, Brooke Van Vleet proudly presented checks to each of the schools.
“The local high schools are at the heart of our communities. It’s a real honor to help support Scappoose, Rainier, and St. Helens high schools. While the school year is over, we will continue the Team Up for Schools campaign year around,” said Van Vleet.
Those who want to support local schools and get their own Team Up for Schools card can pick one up at any area St. Helens Community branch location, or simply add the debit card to their membership at shcu.org.
SELCO Community Credit Union Supports Education Across Oregon
SELCO Community Credit Union, Eugene, Oregon, has a mission to help members achieve their goals. With that in mind, SELCO has awarded $33,000 in college scholarships to 22 graduating seniors across Oregon. The scholarships — each totaling $1,500 — suppport college-related expenses. Scholarship recipients were chosen from applicants in all 26 Oregon counties that SELCO serves. Winners were selected based on criteria such as academic performance and community involvement.
“As is the case every year, we were once again heartened to review the accomplishments of such an impressive group of young Oregon students,” said SELCO’s Vice President of Marketing, Laura Illig. “From its founding more than 80 years ago by a group of teachers and school employees, SELCO has made supporting education a key tenet of its mission to help members and their families achieve their goals. These scholarships are a step in helping these deserving students reach their dreams,” said Illig.
Another way that SELCO supports education is through its Back to School Share Certificate program. For each new account certificate of $1,000, or more, opened this summer, SELCO will donate a $35 gift card to an Oregon K-12 school of the member’s choosing.
This new program is designed to encourage members to save and to support K-12 schools across the state. The program runs through September 2018 and its goal is to raise thousands of dollars for Oregon schools to buy much-needed supplies for the 2018/2019 academic year.
According to Illig, certificates are a savings vehicle that typically offer higher interest rates over fixed terms than conventional savings accounts.
“We want to encourage our members to consider certificates in a thoughtful way that supports SELCO’s mission of investing in the Oregon communities that we call home,” said Illig.
The Back to School program is part of an overall effort by SELCO to encourage savings and to continually improve the financial health of its members.
