Meet Your 2018 Miracle Child: Cass Huff

5/22/18

Meet Cass Huff, your 2018 Miracle Child for the “New York, New York” auction benefitting Credit Unions for Kids.

At 16, Cass Huff has already determined her future: it’s as a Broadway star. She’s fine-tuning the experience she will need, playing the piano, ukulele, guitar, and the clarinet. She is also a singer who belts out a mean version of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.”

Wait. There’s more.

Did we mention that as a Sophomore, she’s already lettered in cheerleading? Or that, in her first year on the track team, she qualified to compete in the State meet?

There’s one more remarkable thing you should know about Cass: she is one of only 150 people in the world with a rare genetic condition called Conradi-Hunermann Syndrome. She’s undergone 42 surgeries to treat this severe scoliosis which left her blind in one eye and deaf in one ear.

None of it has stopped this dynamo from being a good student, a talented entertainer, or an up-and-coming athlete.

It’s a Journey

Cass’s journey began shortly after she was born. A neonatologist who examined her told her mother, “Your perfect baby just is not perfect.”

“I was devastated,” said Cass’s mother, Shannon LeBlue. “I looked at her and saw perfection.”

She found just the right care and compassion at Seattle Children’s Hospital.

“From the moment we walked through the door at Seattle Children’s we felt embraced,” LeBlue said.

That hasn’t changed, not even after all these years.

In fact, two years ago, Cass spent nearly two months in halo traction to give her spinal cord enough room to stretch so doctors could fuse 17 of her vertebrae. The process, though difficult, helped straighten her spine and relieve pressure on her lungs—those same lungs that help her heavenly singing voice.

“When you leave the hospital after a 52-day stay and your child says, “Wow, that was a lot of fun,” something’s been done right,” LeBlue noted.

Cass has accepted your Association’s invitation to serve as the Miracle Child at the 2018 “New York, New York” Gala Auction at MAXX Convention October 17.

Her mom is betting that when you meet Cass, you’ll bid high and often to help eight Children’s Miracle Network hospitals in the Northwest.

Cass, she says, “breaks every barrier. She is an amazing kid who continues to blow me away.”

Editor’s note: Credit Unions for Kids is the Credit Union Movement’s “charity of choice” and was founded here in the Northwest. Donations are being accepted, and registration is now open, for the “New York, New York” Gala Auction. More information is available online.
