Northwest Credit Unions Raise $325K for Northwest Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals
Red Flyer Wagons, and a new “heads or tails” game pushed bidding to new heights.
Credit union professionals and business partners crossed the finish line in style at the Run for the Roses auction during last week’s MAXX Convention. They raised $325,000 — the highest amount ever for the auction — to benefit the eight Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) hospitals in the Northwest.
Credit Unions for Kids is the national Credit Union Movement’s “Charity of Choice,” but it was born in the Northwest in 1986. Credit unions honored their legacy by raising their paddles high during the Kentucky Derby-themed event.
Nate Powers was the auction’s “Miracle” child. Diagnosed with a rare heart condition at age two, he was successfully treated at Spokane’s Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital. Now five, Nate charmed the audience by joining your Association’s President and CEO, Troy Stang, on stage to flip coins in the “Heads or Tails” bidding game, a new feature that had nearly every attendee standing to pledge $25.
Attendees bid on gift baskets and getaways, including a Disney trip, and a California Wine Country excursion. The Napa Valley trip bid will benefit not only CMN hospitals, but also wildfire victims. Twenty- five percent of the winning bid will be donated to the Northwest Credit Union Foundation’s (NWCUF) wildfire relief fund.
The customary over-the-top bidding on the traditional Red Flyer Wagons did not disappoint attendees, particularly when the Spokane credit union community collaborated to contribute $23,000 for Sacred Heart’s wagon. The toy-filled wagons will be delivered to each of the region’s hospitals in the next several months.
Carmen Vigil, NWCUA Community Manager, guided a volunteer committee of Northwest credit union employees who helped create the auction theme and collect a record number of donated auction items. The marketing team at Spokane Valley-based Horizon Credit Union designed the auction’s creative collateral, and CUNA Mutual Group was the event’s” Millionaire’s Row” sponsor.
