Amodei & Aguilar Amendment Approved in Appropriations Bill
The House’s decision represents a major win for credit union advocates.
In a key victory for credit unions across the nation, the Amodei & Aguilar amendment to the Fiscal Year 2018 Appropriations Bill was approved on the House floor this week.
This July, the House Appropriations Committee passed a bill that included language that would move the NCUA under the Congressional appropriations process. There were concerns that this language would not only weaken the independence of the NCUA, but also result in higher costs to credit unions to fund the agency’s operations and examinations. Credit union advocates across the nation negotiated the Amodei & Aguilar amendment to strip the NCUA from this action, and the House voiced its approval this week.
“This decision is a major win for credit unions. Thank you to all of you who urged your Members of Congress and their staffs to support this amendment,” said Jennifer Wagner, Chief Advocacy Officer for the Northwest Credit Union Association. “Those of us in D.C. this week for NWCUA’s Fall Hike the Hill were able to lobby in person right before the vote took place, and we know your voices played a vital role in the amendment’s success.”
