International Credit Union Day celebrates the Credit Union Movement and the nine cooperative principles that make up not-for-profit, member-owned financial cooperatives. For many Northwest credit unions, the day—and a few before—also meant time to teach financial education to students in their communities.
“It was great to see so many professional people come to our school and care about us,” one of the students said, at a fair organized by St. Helens Community Credit Union.
While total number of students reached is still being calculated, early results point to another impactful effort. Gesa Credit Union alone was represented at three schools with more than two dozen volunteers, reaching 142 students.
BECU, WSECU, Sunset Science Park CU, Oregon State CU and Point West CU also participated in the reality fairs.
Check back in later issues of Anthem for more on today’s fairs and the efforts of the credit unions behind them.
Spokane Chapter breaks out the elbow grease
Troy Stang, President and CEO of Your Association, joined the Spokane Chapter of Credit Unions to build out new playground equipment (and spend time with some of the kids) at Northeast Youth Center in Spokane.
Volunteers assisted in building a playhouse, laying out rubber protective mats under the play structure as well as organizing books and materials inside the center.
A ribbon cutting is scheduled for October 24 to debut the new space.
Governor Brown issues Proclamation recognizing ICU Day in Oregon
Referencing the substantial impact of Oregon’s 62 credit unions on both Oregon’s economy and their individual members’ financial futures, Governor Kate Brown issued a proclamation recognizing and celebrating International Credit Union Day, as well.
The Proclamation was shared at some of today’s Oregon financial reality fairs and International Credit Union Day events.
