King County Legislative Event to Feature Congressional Contender Pramila Jayapal

An upcoming chapter event—hosted by the King County Chapter of Credit Unions—is taking on added interest, thanks to the attendance of a contender to replace the retiring Congressman Jim McDermott, who has held the seat since 1989.

Pramila Jayapal (right) has represented the 37th legislative district in the Washington State Senate since 2015. She has been running to replace Congressman McDermott and will be on hand to discuss the importance of credit unions to the dialogue in Washington D.C.

“We’re excited that Senator Jayapal is attending the event, said Samantha Beeler, Director of Grassroots Advocacy for NWCUA. “This is all about connecting Northwest credit unions and elected officials to further showcase the difference credit unions make in their communities.”

The event will be moderated by Brian Callanan, host and moderator of the Seattle Channel’s award-winning public affairs programs City Inside/Out and Seattle Speaks.

“There is an opportunity to inform the dialogue about what is happening in Washington, DC and issues affecting credit unions—from marijuana banking to regulatory relief to protecting our members’ tax status,” added John Zmolek, President and CEO of Verity Credit Union and NWCUA Board Member.

Verity’s Business Development Manager (and KCCCU Board Member) Jeremy Sankwich, echoed Zmolek, while also making a pitch to young credit union professionals to consider attending.

“Local legislative events, especially town hall formats like this one, offer a great introduction into credit union advocacy and the chance to participate in the conversation with credit union executives and elected officials,” he said.

The event will be at Palisade Restaurant (2601 W Marina Pl, Seattle). Tickets are available at the KCCCU website for $50, and are selling out quickly.
