Red Canoe Awards $26,500 in Scholarships

Red Canoe Credit Union (Longview, WA) recently awarded $26,500 in college scholarships to high school students and adults wishing to further their education this fall.
After founding the credit union while working for Weyerhaeuser Company, Wally Ohlfs—for whom the program is named—served as the credit union manager and President from its inception in 1937 until 1975 and was a tireless advocate for the credit union industry.
The Wally Ohlfs Scholarship Program is available to graduating High School seniors who have maintained a cumulative high school GPA of 3.0 or higher and will be enrolling full-time in an accredited college or university. This year’s recipients were:
- $3,000 recipient, Kaylee Hatfield of Toutle Lake, WA.
- $2,000 recipients: Joshua Pfenniger, Sunny Kallunki and Matthew Avalon of Longview, WA; Sarah Probasco of Rainier, OR; Julianna Kampe of Frisco, TX.
- $1,500 recipients: Jared Bott of Oregon City, OR; Shelly Pitts of Toutle Lake, WA; Mykaela Thomas of Puyallup, WA; Monica Guisenger of Rainier, OR.
- $1,000 recipients: Rayne Heath of Kelso, WA; Jacob Greatorex of Kalama, WA; Samantha Holland of Rainier, OR; Molly Beamer of Albany, OR.
In addition to the Wally Ohlfs scholarships, Red Canoe also offers $1,000 in continuing education and nontraditional scholarships. This year’s winners were Alison Brennan, Mac Gaul, Jordan Lewis and Kasey Moss.
