Raising money for a great cause doesn’t have to be hard. On October 15, many credit union members went “shopping for good,” knowing that every swipe of their credit and debit cards racked up donations for their local children’s hospitals.
The campaign, called Shop for Good, raised $52,616 for Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland, Oregon, thanks to six participating credit unions. Each credit union committed to donate a small amount of money—often 25 cents—for each swipe of their members’ cards on International Credit Union Day.
All those swipes add up.
On November 16, representatives from Rivermark Community Credit Union arrived at Doernbecher with a check for over $25,000.
“Rivermark’s employees, members, and volunteers care deeply about their community and work every day to make an impact,” said Rivermark President and CEO Scott Burgess. “To see the whole Rivermark community step up to support the lifesaving work of Doernbecher Children’s Hospital is very moving. This is yet another example of the way that credit unions like Rivermark live out our philosophy of People Helping People.”
Other credit unions that donated to Doernbecher through Shop for Miracles include:
- Advantis CU
- OnPoint Community CU
- St. Helens Community CU
- Sunset Science Park FCU
- Unitus Community CU
Shop for Miracles is a program of Credit Unions for Kids, the nationwide credit union initiative to support the lifesavings work of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. In 2014, Northwest credit unions raised nearly $1.6 million for children’s hospitals in their communities.
