Seventy financial technology startups each had seven minutes to present during the two-day Finovate conference in New York City last month. The Northwest Credit Union Association sent its Director of Strategic Partnerships, Craig Reed, to scout the field.
“The New York conference had an international flair,” said Reed, who has attended previous Finovate events on the West Coast. “There were companies from Sweden, England, and Poland who presented.”
Reed helped pioneer the Northwest Credit Union Association’s betaSpace program, wherein Northwest credit unions have preferred access to the most promising fintech startups. He said that some of the hottest trends at the event included innovative ways to open accounts and retain members, plus novel ways to help Millennials save or pay off debt.
He joined representatives from the likes of CUNA Mutual Group, CUNA Strategic Services, CO-OP Financial Services, FIS, and many other key credit union partners. Also present were representatives from Visa, MasterCard, and some of the world’s largest financial institutions.
The NWCUA was the only state league represented at the conference.
Startups touched on many other financial technology topics, said Reed. Including
- Innovative collections tools;
- Investment dashboards and tools;
- Buy local/card reward programs;
- Biometric authentication;
- Loan origination platforms; and
- “All in one” lifestyle apps.
