Cybersecurity, Growing Market Share, Serving Marijuana Businesses to Highlight Credit Union Convention

Portland, Oregon—Credit unions, the financial services choice of more than 5 million Northwest consumers, will be in the spotlight at Amplify Convention in Portland October 6-8. The convention is sponsored by the Northwest Credit Union Association, the trade association representing 160 credit unions throughout Oregon and Washington. The location is the Hilton Portland & Executive Tower, 921 SW 6th Ave. Portland, Oregon 97204.

As not-for-profit cooperatives, locally operated credit unions deliver their earnings back to members in the form of better interest rates and lower fees. Unlike their profit driven, Wall St. counterparts, credit unions do not pay stockholders, and give voice to their members.

Highlights of Amplify include:

  • Credit Union Popularity. In the Northwest, 47% of the population has chosen credit unions as their best choice for financial services. Learn more about the credit union value proposition. (Tuesday afternoon)
  • Smoking Hot or Up in Smoke? While recreational pot is legal in Washington and Oregon, federal law and regulatory requirements continue to make it difficult for credit unions to provide banking services to legal marijuana businesses. Get a front row seat to hear from the experts. (Wednesday afternoon)
  • HACK ATTACK!@!! International crime rings are wreaking havoc with hack attacks, breaching credit cards, tampering with ATMs, and stealing identities. Credit unions are strengthening their protective shields. (Wednesday afternoon)
  • Handicapping the Political Landscape. With a potentially historic election just a year away, David Wasserman, House Editor for The Cook Political Report, will look at the year ahead and how the balance of power may shift. (Thursday morning)
  • Credit Unions for Kids Auction. The credit union movement’s “charity of choice” was founded here in the Northwest nearly 30 years ago. Since then, it has contributed over $130 million to the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. A dinner and auction will raise money for six Northwest CMN hospitals. (Wednesday evening)

Hundreds of credit union leaders and business services partners are expected at Amplify Convention. Media wishing to attend may contact Lynn Heider.

The Northwest Credit Union Association is the not-for-profit trade association representing over 160 of Oregon and Washington’s credit unions and their 5 million members. The NWCUA is the voice of the Northwest credit union movement, providing legislative, regulatory, and public advocacy in addition to education, compliance, networking support, and business solutions to credit unions.
