School Employees Credit Union of Washington Becomes Inspirus Credit Union

Inspirus Credit Union is the new name of School Employees Credit Union of Washington, but the credit union’s mission of supporting education in the state runs all the way back to 1936. Founded as Washington Teachers’ Credit Union, the institution has been a trusted financial partner for educators for nearly 80 years.

On Monday, August 3, the credit announced its new brand — Inspirus Credit Union — a combination of the words “inspire” and “us,” which, the credit union says, “speaks to the strength we have as members to support and lift each other up.”

“In March 2015, we opened membership to everyone with a passion for education,” said the credit union on its website. “That includes school employees, of course, but also parents, volunteers, caregivers and students. We wanted a name that welcomes everyone. Also, at about the same time, we revised our mission and clarified our vision as a financial services organization valued most for our contributions to education. The new name celebrates that.”

The credit union released a video detailing the values behind the name change. “Recently we updated our mission to honor our educational roots and to move the credit union forward,” says Inspirus President and CEO Scott Adkins in the video. “As I’ve gone around the state I’ve met with many of you, our members, and received many inspiring stories about the transformative power of education. And your credit union wants to be more involved. We believe that giving back to education is core to our roots, and we look forward to giving back both time and money to educational initiatives.”

“I believe that we will be best known for our contributions to education,” Adkins continues, “and that is inspiring.”
