Streifel: ‘We Win in Advocacy Only When We Work Together’

More than 3,000 credit union professionals and business partners representing 61 countries are attending the conference. In the opening ceremonies, flags from all of those nations were carried through a packed auditorium, and four outstanding credit union leaders were presented with the World Council’s Distinguished Service Awards.
Against that backdrop, Streifel delivered an inspired reminder of how credit unions worldwide are rooted in the 7 principles defining cooperatives.
With regard to voluntary membership, Streifel noted, “Loyalty is earned and we must demonstrate every day that we are our members’ best financial partner.”
“My favorite, so everybody listen to this,” Streifel continued, “is cooperation among the cooperators. We win in advocacy only when we work together.”
“Let’s talk about removing barriers to service excellence,” said Streifel. “Advocacy has been re-imagined into a 360-degree view that takes into account federal, state and local needs, and calls on all of us to step up and get involved. We can do this if we do it together.”
Noting that credit unions’ foundation is strong, Streifel acknowledged that “celebrating our heritage alone isn’t good enough to hold us together.” The movement, she said, must continue to modernize to meet the changing needs of its members.
Streifel gave her perspective as CUNA Board Chair on how she believes CUNA and the league system are evolving to meet those needs. She lauded the leadership of CUNA President and CEO Jim Nussle. Streifel was tasked last year with helping to identify and interview candidates for the position.
“When the CUNA Board of Directors hired Jim Nussle last September, we gave him three clear mandates: reenergize and deliver the CUNA-league value proposition, focus on credit union advocacy, and ignite and challenge the credit union movement,” she said. “On behalf of the board, we believe we picked the right leader.”
