Red Canoe Business Development Officer Wins Mentor of the Year

Bridget O’Connor, Red Canoe Credit Union’s Business Develop Officer, was recently recognized as the 2015 Mentor of the Year by Communities in Schools of Federal Way. Bridget has mentored Janae, her mentee, for over four years; a commitment that spans much deeper than simply volunteering.

“Janae is outgoing, funny, smart, beautiful (inside and out) and has infinite leadership potential,” said O’Connor in her acceptance speech from the stage. “It’s incredibly rewarding to watch her mature and grow more confident with her talents. Some of the best fun I’ve had is watching her play against my daughter’s softball and basketball teams over the past 2 years.”

The Communities in Schools of Federal Way Mentor Program recruits volunteer mentors from the community and matches them with students in grades 5-12 based on key interests and other criteria. Mentors meet with students for 45-60 minutes per week at the student’s school during the school day. The primary goal of mentoring is to provide the student with support and encouragement. Last year, the program successfully matched 168 students with a caring adult mentor.

The credit unions of Oregon and Washington not only improve their members’ lives, they are foundational to the entire Northwest economy. Learn more here.
