The people of Fibre Federal are passionate about supporting Doernbecher Children’s Hospital. It’s not just because the credit union movement has selected Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Hospitals as its charity of choice. And it’s not just because Doernbecher ranks among the nation’s best children’s hospitals.
The team at Fibre Federal have experienced Doernbecher’s lifesaving work, some for their own children. That’s why, every year, they team up with iQ Credit Union to host Ride & Rock, a motorcycle-and-music-driven fundraiser that raises tens of thousands of dollars for Doernbecher through Credit Unions for Kids, the national credit union campaign to fund CMN Hospitals.
This year’s event is coming up on August 22, and registration is now open at the Ride & Rock website.
Erik Terrel works in information systems for the credit union. Some years ago his daughter Hunter was away at basketball camp when she had a severe asthma attack. Her airway became completely blocked.
“They tried to give her asthma medicine, and she had a nebulizer at the camp, but the medicine wasn’t going into her lungs,” said Terrel.
Hunter lost consciousness. An ambulance came and inserted a breathing tube and transported her to Doernbecher, where the medical team worked to revive her.
“Because she had stopped breathing we didn’t know what was going to happen after they were able to revive her,” said Terrel, “whether there would be brain damage.” He paused to gather his emotions. “She was fine.”
“The medical staff were super professional and at the same time very reassuring,” said Terrel. “They were able to help keep us calm and focused on Hunter.”
In a recent video featuring Terrel, two other Fibre Federal staff members share stories of how Doernbecher provided potentially lifesaving treatment to their children as well.
“These stories from our staff, like thousands of others, happen at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital on a regular basis,” said Fibre Federal President and CEO Larry Hoff. “Doernbecher offers world class care to all children, regardless of their ability to repay.”
Hoff came up with the idea for Ride & Rock together with iQ President and CEO Roger Michaelis. Both CEOs love to ride motorcycles, and both have shown a strong commitment to supporting CMN Hospitals and Doernbecher in particular.
The event kicks off with a “poker run” up Mt. St. Helens, where riders stop at certain points along the way to pick up playing cards, hoping to be dealt the best hand. This year’s event will include a concert by American Idol finalist Crystal Bowersox.
Those who want to ride, those who want to rock, and those who want to do both are all invited to register at the event’s website.
