When a credit union leader witnessed a heart transplant in a three-month-old patient earlier this year, they understood why the word ‘miracle’ sits in the middle of Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Hospitals. And credit unions know that these miracles don’t come for free.
In 2014, the credit unions of Oregon and Washington stepped up to keep the miracles coming, donating a record $1,588,493 to Credit Unions for Kids in support of the six regional CMN Hospitals.
“The heartfelt work and incredible efforts on behalf of Northwest credit unions make a direct impact in the lives of children right here in our community,” said Kira Haller, Program Director at Seattle Children’s Hospital. “Last year, Seattle Children’s Hospital paid more than $120 million for families who couldn’t afford the cost of their care. Thanks to the generosity and dedication of credit unions’ employees and members, we can continue to give the best care, find better treatments and research breakthroughs to protect the future of our children.”
Jack Fallis, Board Chair of the Northwest Credit Union Association and President and CEO of Global Credit Union, said that credit unions’ generosity is a sign of their values. “I am proud to be part of a community that backs up its values with action. Northwest credit unions’ record-breaking fundraising for Credit Unions for Kids shows that the ‘people helping people’ philosophy is truly at the heart of our movement and our industry.”
One of the year’s Credit Unions for Kids fundraising highlights was the Heroes of Hope Gala and Auction, which took place alongside the NWCUA’s Amplify Convention. Credit union leaders from around the Northwest gathered to take part in the CMN Hospitals story and raised over $200,000 in a single night.
Nationally, credit unions raised a record $10,750,000 to support CMN Hospitals through Credit Unions for Kids.
“I would like to thank the credit union movement for supporting this powerful initiative which helps millions of children in need and creates tremendous awareness for credit unions nationwide,” said Jim Nussle, President and CEO of Credit Union National Association.
The credit union movement has donated more than $140 million to CMN Hospitals since 1996.
“Our credit union partners have an incredible impact on the children and families in the communities they serve,” said John Lauck, President and CEO of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. “We appreciate their commitment to ‘Put the Money Where the Miracles Are’ which ensures that kids across the country receive the specialized care they deserve.”
Northwest credit unions are planning another banner year in Credit Unions for Kids, with auctions, golf tournaments, jeans days and many other fundraisers already in progress. “2014 was great year,” said Jamie Dedmon, Managing Director of the Northwest Credit Union Foundation, “and it’s only the beginning. We are going to make sure CMN Hospitals can keep working their miracles for years to come.”
