“Pay it Forward” Rewards Unsung Heroes in Central Oregon

Volunteer Dee Ann Lewis received $500 in recognition for her work at nonprofit FACT (Families and Communities Together)and the Giggles Learning Center in LaPine. Travis Knudsen from KTVZ (left) and Karri Webster, a bus driver at Bend-La Pine Schools (right), delivered the good news.

For the past two years, Mid Oregon Credit Union and its local partners have handed over five, crisp $100 bills to volunteers who demonstrate selfless acts of kindness in the community. “Pay it Forward” began in 2012, when Mid Oregon, local television station KTVZ News Channel 21, and propane provider CoEnergy, sought to elevate and recognize the impact of individuals and small organizations that largely went unnoticed.

The public is invited via television and social media to submit nominations. A committee that includes a credit union representative makes the ultimate selection. The winners included Dee Ann Lewis, who volunteers at a center that offers daycare and family services; Devin’s Destiny, an organization that organizes birthday parties for homeless children; and a local elementary school library in desperate need of books.

The credit unions of Oregon and Washington not only improve their members’ lives, they are foundational to the entire Northwest economy. Learn more here.
