CUNA announced Monday that, effective immediately, Chief Economist Bill Hampel would also take on the role of chief policy officer. In this newly created role, Hampel will advise new CUNA President and CEO Jim Nussle and Chief of Staff Rich Meade on key policy initiatives.

Hampel will also continue in his role as chief economist.

“Every day I am impressed with the depth of knowledge and perspective Bill brings to the many opportunities and challenges we face,” Nussle said. “His wise counsel has been a great value to me in my first weeks here at CUNA, and I look forward our work together in the years ahead.”

Hampel served as CUNA’s interim president and CEO in June through September of this year after the departure of former President and CEO Bill Cheney.

One of the longest-tenured executives at CUNA, Hampel joined the association as an economist in 1978, was promoted to chief economist in 1985, and was again promoted to senior vice president of research and policy analysis in 1992. He oversees CUNA’s economics and statistics department.
