With the American credit union movement poised to hit the 100 million member milestone this summer, the World Council of Credit Unions (World Council) released a new report on the movement’s global strength.

By the numbers, the statistical report finds:

  • Asia, Latin America and Europe were the world’s fastest growing regions in terms of membership;
  • In 2013, worldwide membership grew by over seven million new members;
  • Nearly 208 million members are being served by 56,904 credit unions globally; and
  • Worldwide assets are reported at the equivalent of $1.7 trillion US.

World Council reports data based on country responses to its annual survey, and does not make estimates for non-reporting countries. New countries reporting 2013 data included Rwanda and Zambia.
