When credit union members use their credit or debit cards on Oct. 16, they’ll be buying a whole lot more than groceries or gas. They’ll also be shopping for miracles.
Credit Unions for Kids, in partnership with CUNA and the World Council of Credit Unions, announced this week that it will sponsor “Shop for Miracles,” a one-day fundraising campaign to support Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. The event will help celebrate International Credit Union Day on Thursday, Oct. 16.
Every time members use their credit union-issued credit or debit card on Oct. 16, credit unions participating in the “Shop for Miracles” program will donate 25 cents or another predetermined amount to their local Children’s Miracle Network Hospital, including the six regional hospitals in Oregon and Washington.
Better yet: CO-OP Financial Services will provide matching funds through its Miracle Match program, starting at dollar-for-dollar up to $10,000, for approved credit union applications. (Applications for CO-OP matching funds are available online at www.co-opfs.org/miracle-match.)
“Last year we sponsored a pilot program with the California and Nevada Credit Union leagues that resulted in CO-OP providing a match of more than $30,000,” says Stan Hollen, CO-OP’s president and CEO. “In 2014, credit unions across the country have the opportunity to support their local children’s hospital and be engaged in their communities in a very meaningful way on International Credit Union Day.”
Redwood Credit Union in Santa Rosa, Calif., was one of 21 credit unions that participated in last year’s pilot program, which raised $185,000. Redwood promoted “Shop for Miracles” through its website, newsletter, local print ads, in-branch signage, email and social media, and saw a 38-percent increase in member card transactions over the projected total for that date.
“The one-day campaign raised just over $27,000, which included a $5,000 match from CO-OP,” says Redwood President/CEO Brett Martinez. “We support several CU4Kids fundraising programs, and this one beat all expectations.”
Beginning in June, member-facing collateral material to help participating credit unions promote “Shop for Miracles” will be available at www.cu4kids.org. Until then, more information is available by contacting Joe Dearborn, senior director for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
CO-OP Financial Services is accepting applications for “Shop for Miracles” matching funds immediately, with a deadline of Sept. 30. Credit unions can apply on the CO-OP Financial Services website at www.co-opfs.org/miracle-match.
“CO-OP’s support is another example of the company’s fund-raising leadership for CMN Hospitals, which provide desperately needed medical services to sick and injured children regardless of the family’s ability to pay,” Dearborn says. “The credit union industry is the third-largest donor to CMN Hospitals through Credit Unions for Kids fundraisers, and we are very grateful for the movement’s support again in 2014.”
