Round Two: ‘Don’t Tax Tuesday’ Targets Returning Congress

Credit unions and their supporters are being asked to build on the success of July’s “Don’t Tax Tuesday” campaign by using Facebook and Twitter to send Congress a simple message today: “Don’t Tax My Credit Union!”
“I urge you to join in and help,” says Bill Cheney, president and CEO of the Credit Union National Association. “Tax reform shows every sign of heating up this fall. Let Congress again hear credit unions loud and clear.”
Both CUNA and the Northwest Credit Union Association have created toolkits to make participation in “Don’t Tax Tuesday” fast, simple and convenient. On CUNA’s website, for example, entering your contact information will create prewritten Tweets and Facebook posts that automatically include your lawmakers’ handles.
NWCUA’s “Truth Speaks” site includes the Twitter handle for every member of the Northwest’s Congressional delegation, as well as a variety of sample posts—many specific to the Northwest. “Truth is, 70% of voters in Or & WA support credit union not-for-profit status,” one reads. “#donttaxmycu.”
“Our Northwest delegation is generally very supportive of credit unions,” says Lynn Heider, NWCUA’s vice president of public relations and communications. “So it may feel like preaching to the choir. But their staffs track these messages, and a successful Twitter marathon will give them the reinforcements they need to make sure any tax reform protects the credit union tax exemption.”
