Every day children are admitted to our local children’s hospitals to battle terminal illnesses such as cancer. Many face life-altering surgeries and fight to conquer these diseases through painful treatments and procedures. What these young children face has continued to inspire credit unions in the Northwest to work tirelessly raising both awareness and funds through the Credit Unions for Kids program benefitting the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (CMNH).
Some of the many champions who have stepped up to this cause include iQ and Fibre credit unions, which recently rallied together to host the annual Credit Unions for Kids Ride & Rock fundraiser, benefitting Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland, Ore.
The event was a philanthropic partnership by both credit unions to raise money for children in need, as well as to promote their credit unions’ commitment to giving back to the community.
Open to both members of the credit unions and non-members, this event featured a route that included stops sponsored by credit unions and local businesses. The ride also featured the CU4Kids Hospital Teddy Bear Drop sponsored by the NWCUF. The Northwest Credit Union Foundation (NWCUF) provided a $5,000 sponsorship that matched each purchase made by a participant for custom “Biker Bears.” These endearing stuffed animals were hand delivered to children at Doernbecher Hospital. KOIN 6 News highlighted the Hospital Toy Drop, capturing the moment when riders stopped by on “cool bikes” to drop off teddy bears.
The ride concluded at Bethany Vineyard, where a jazz concert and picnic dinner were hosted by iQ and Fibre.
With the support of nearly 40 local businesses, including 11 credit unions, 30 volunteers and over 150 participants, the Credit Union for Kids Ride & Rock raised over $36,000 which will go towards providing children with the best pediatric care available at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital. The cooperative philosophy of “People Helping People” is evident by the success of partnerships between The Northwest Credit Foundation, local credit unions, businesses, and community organizations.
