“Don’t Tax Tuesday” Twitter Marathon Scheduled for Sept. 10

More than 230,000 credit union members live in Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler’s (R-Wash.) district. Sending tweets to this credit union champion should be positive, but her staff would likely welcome tracking just how passionate credit union members are about preserving the credit union tax status.
The 260,000 credit union members in U.S. Rep. Suzanne Bonamici’s (D-Ore.) district saved, on average, at least $80 in 2012 because their credit unions charged lower fees and offered better loan rates than banks charged Oregonians.
Those are some of the district-specific sample tweets available in the online Truth Speaks toolkit for Northwest Credit Union Association (NWCUA) member credit unions.
The NWCUA is joining the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) in a second “Don’t Tax Tuesday” Twitter marathon on Sept. 10.

“Congress returns from recess and we’re asking our advocates to join us in another “Don’t Tax Tuesday,” says Lynn Heider, NWCUA vice president of public relations and communications. “If you could spend a couple of hours preparing messages for both of your senators and for your representative, the numbers will add up fast.”
Northwest credit union advocates already helped with two previous Twitter campaigns this summer—a national event targeting the Senate in July resulted in more than 2,170 tweets and a Northwest event in August targeted Congress.
“Our Northwest delegation is generally very supportive of credit unions,” Heider says. “So it may feel like preaching to the choir. But their staffs track these messages, and a successful Twitter marathon will give them the reinforcements they need to make sure any tax reform protects the credit union tax exemption.”
