Three-Month Promotion Lifts Credit Card Program

With the need to strengthen its Platinum Rewards credit card portfolio and increase card usage among existing members, Weber State Credit Union utilized the ScoreCard® rewards program from Card Services for Credit Unions (CSCU). At the end of a three-month promotional period, Weber State’s Platinum Rewards credit card program grew 7% in the number of open and active accounts, 3.2% in the loan balance, and 12.6% year over year in interchange income.
“The results of the ScoreCard promotion were eye opening as to the possibilities of using it on an ongoing basis, which based on the market research, will give us a significant competitive advantage,” said Mark Chamberlain, member service manager, Weber State Credit Union. “The support of the ScoreCard and CSCU’s Portfolio Consulting Services (PCS) teams was really the catalyst to us successfully using ScoreCard to incentivize our members and employees.”
Prior to using ScoreCard, Weber State Credit Union’s Platinum Rewards card program experienced two years of negative growth. It enlisted the support of Portfolio Consulting Services, a standard benefit to CSCU members, to help build the new loyalty promotion, which offered: bonus rewards points for gas and grocery purchases for all Platinum Rewards card members; 10,000 bonus points for new cards opened during the three-month period for members who spent at least $5,000; and 5,000 bonus points for members who spent at least $2,000. Weber State Credit Union also extended the rewards program to employees to improve member engagement, and along with a free rewards checking account, employees received 1,000 ScoreCard rewards points per credit card account referred or opened during the promotion.
“ScoreCard helped level the playing field for Weber State Credit Union and allows them to compete with big banks,” added Joe Reid, regional account executive, CSCU. “It’s important for credit unions to understand it’s not an intimidating process to implement a promotional campaign; it’s just a matter of minutes to sign up.”
