Collector

SUMMARY:

Responsible for the coordination of debt recovery duties for the purpose of  maintaining quality control of loans and shares as well as maintaining acceptable delinquency ratios.  Participates in loss recovery efforts as directed by the vice president of lending. Is responsible for processing and documenting work thoroughly, accurately and in compliance with applicable regulations and credit union procedures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

  • Proactively contacts members with delinquent and/or at-risk loans to assure repayment. Confer with members to determine reason for overdue payment, reviewing terms of loan, charge, or credit contract with member.
  • Reviews account records daily to determine if past due member accounts can be offset by funds on deposit.
  • Makes acceptable loan repayment arrangements with members who have delinquent loans and or shares
  • Provides member remedial financial counseling upon request.
  • Coordinates with others including personnel of service and system providers, credit card companies, credit bureaus, insurance companies, collateral protection agencies.
  • Determines appropriate legal action.
  • Responsible for the administration and processing of board approved loan and overdraft charge offs, monthly reconciliation, member research and account corrections. Ensures timely processing of service requests, skip claims, garnishments, levies Subpoena’s and notice of impounds.
  • Stays current with all provisions of the Federal and State Bankruptcy codes and regulations as well as Repossession and Collection Laws.
  • Responsible for ensuring effective and professional communications is maintained between the credit union and its members throughout the collection’s process.
  • Audits collateral protection insurance reports for accuracy and submits insurance premium payments and processes refunds in a timely manner.
  • Coordinates with the member service department, regarding investigations of fraud activities such as altered checks, forgery, counterfeit checks, and other member fraud activities to the credit union.  Responsible for requesting police reports and filing timely insurance claims for reimbursement to the credit union.
  • Answers member inquiries/requests to process payments, update member information in computer database.
  • Documents and maintains accurate, up to date information regarding member accounts.  Process updated information received by telephone or by mail in a timely manner.  Notifies VP of Lending/CEO immediately of urgent information.
  • Sorts, files and coordinates action on correspondence.
  • Receives payments and posts amount paid to borrower’s account when received from attorneys, courts, collection agencies, and other non?traditional payment methods.
  • At all times, maintains a professional demeanor and respectful tone when discussing delinquency issues with members.
  • Performs other clerical and loan servicing activity as may be assigned from time to time.  Keeps VP of Lending apprised of progress on a regular basis.
  • Generates monthly reports as assigned.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and two to three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Consumer loan and credit card collections experience.
  • Knowledge of federal regulations including the Fair Debt Collection Practice Act, Reg Z, and Bankruptcy laws.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs.
  • General knowledge of credit union operations, history and philosophy preferred.
