Community Relations Officer

Position Summary:

The primary responsibility of the Community Relations Officer is to ensure the development and continuation of SEG programs and community partnerships.  Promote the Credit Union’s image and growth in the local community through coordinating and implementing internal and external Credit Union promotional programs, activities, and events. Contribute to the success of the Credit Union by providing superior service according to Sound Credit Union’s Service Promise.  



  • Provide high priority to member satisfaction; act in accordance with Sound Credit Union’s Service Promise expectations. 
  • Create, cultivate, and deepen strategic partnerships with key community and SEG groups.  Represent the Credit Union through participation in community events and networking.  Engage and motivate employees to participate in community involvement.
  • Plan, coordinate, and implement educational workshop programs and community events for SEG groups including advertising, registration, locations etc., which will require working early mornings, late evenings, and weekends.
  • Develop goals, strategies and guidelines, in conjunction with the Vice President of Marketing, for charitable giving, staff volunteerism, community partnerships, and programs that are aligned with the Credit Union’s strategic business objectives.
  • Collaborate and communicate with the Marketing department to effectively promote community relation events.
  • Develop, implement and manage programs of high-impact, high-visibility community involvement.
  • Build internal partnerships, working collaboratively with Human Resources, Marketing, branches, Business Services, Real Estate, etc, to build participation and awareness of community involvement opportunities.
  • Provide timely follow-up with member, employee, and other public inquiries regarding community involvement.
  • Identify mechanisms to measure direct and indirect impact of community relations initiatives on engagement, strategic objectives, and brand enhancement. Provide recommendations that help achieve stated objectives.
  • Track and measure inputs, outputs, and impacts of programs.  Inform management and board of directors of progress and new developments.
  • Regularly make recommendations to maximize philanthropic investments (donations, sponsorships), and to identify cost improvements.
  • Participate in departmental projects that contribute to the Credit Union’s culture, strategic vision, and achievement of goals.
  • Monitor social and community trends and issues.
  • Contribute as an effective project team member and complete all tasks and assignments in a timely manner.
  • Assist in the maintenance of the marketing plan and budget. 


  • Continuously seek process improvements in all operations with the ultimate goal to improve the quality of member service.
  • Assist members with inquiries, requests, and/or problems in a friendly, respectful, courteous, and professional manner. 
  • Communicate and reinforce organizational culture and values.
  • Maintain maximum security over valuables on hand.  Adhere to established security procedures to ensure Credit Union security is maintained at all times.
  • Recognize situations, which because of risks or hazards involved, are beyond his/her limits and directs them to the appropriate person.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with supervisor, informing him/her of all pertinent problems, irregularities, new developments, changes and other important information within area of responsibility. 
  • Maintain a professional and courteous attitude with all people, including fellow employees, members, Management, Board Members and outside vendors. Cooperate with other branch/department personnel to ensure “team effort” and “prompt member service” are consistently practiced.
  • Project a positive image of the Credit Union by assuring proper maintenance, cleanliness and security of work area, desk, equipment, etc. Adhere to Credit Union attire standards.
  • Maintain confidentiality in performing assignments relative to any information received directly or indirectly.  Ensure that all information and transactions regarding Credit Union members are kept confidential.
  • Maintain current knowledge of Credit Union philosophy, plus all Credit Union products and services.
  • Demonstrate compliance with all State and Federal banking regulations, including the Bank Secrecy Act.
  • Comply with Credit Union policies and procedures.
  • Report to work on time and as scheduled.
  • Perform other duties as needed or assigned.


Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience: Three years’ experience organizing and conducting special events and projects in a Business Development/Community Relations position. Experience within a financial institution preferred.

Education/Training: High School Diploma or GED equivalent required. Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Community Relations, Business Administration, or related field, preferred.

License or certificate: Must have valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, proof of insurance, and a clean driving history. Must be bondable.

  • Ability to attain or have knowledge of financial institution procedures, services and programs.
  • Computer experience including calculator, PC, database, spreadsheet and word processing systems and software.
  • Proficient typing skills, with intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word and Outlook).
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including listening, oral, and written skills.
  • Must possess and exhibit a high degree of professionalism, maturity, and patience.
  • Strong organization skills and the ability to manage multiple responsibilities.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.


  • Requires the ability to read, write, communicate, and interpret information accurately in English.
