An innovative matching-funds program at OSU Federal Credit Union helped raise funds to support the credit union movement itself while simultaneously generating a $25,000 to Credit Unions for Kids.
The Corvallis-based credit union’s staff dedicated $15,000 out of their own pockets to the Credit Union Legislative Action Council (CULAC), demonstrating their support for the credit union movement with the knowledge that their funds would be matched through an OSU Federal dollar-for-dollar commitment to the Credit Union for Kids program.
The staff of approximately 200 pledged a record amount, and OSU Federal sent the matching funds to benefit the Children’s Miracle Network programs at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland, Ore., and Sacred Heart Hospital in Eugene, Ore.
“Credit unions in Oregon have supported Credit Unions for Kids in different ways for many years,” said OSU Federal President and CEO Rick Hein. “Our team decided this year to tie two great causes together to make a difference. The staff invested in the credit union’s future and at the same time contributed to the future of kids. I’m totally in awe of our staff’s generosity.”
Those original CULAC donations ultimately went even further, as OSU Federal was granted a match of $10,000 from CO-OP Financial Services, one of the credit union’s business partners. OSU Federal was awarded the maximum grant through CO-OP’s Miracle Match program, which is dedicated to efforts for the Children’s Miracle Network.
“This was so great to see and help make possible through our Miracle Match program,” CO-OP Financial Services Regional Vice President Nina Kopp said. “In the last year, we have been able to team with credit unions nationally to contribute $2.7 million to more than 70 Children’s Miracle Network hospitals. We are proud partners with OSU Federal.”
OSU Federal celebrated the effort at its Dec. 13 staff meeting with representatives of the two hospital foundations, CO-OP Financial Services and the Northwest Credit Union Association (NWCUA).
“OSU FCU is not only our regional CULAC champion, they are a national leader and model for CULAC fundraising,” said Jennifer Wagner, vice president of legislative advocacy for the NWCUA. “Rick Hein and his management team have instilled a culture that understands that CULAC fundraising directly impacts the future of credit unions. These funds are critical to electing and retaining credit union champions in Congress and we have much more work to do in this area. Thank you to everyone at OSU FCU for your commitment and leadership in this area.”
