OSU FCU - Peter Walker Next Top CU ExecOSU Federal Credit Union’s Peter Walker is one of five finalists for the 2012 The Credit Union Executives Society (CUES) “Next Top Credit Union Executive” challenge.

The regional branch manager has moved from an initial field of more than 130 nominees through 31 international semi-finalists as he vied to be named the Next Top Credit Union Exec. He will travel to Florida for the final rounds of judging and voting in early November.

Walker, 33, started at OSU Federal in September of 2002 as a financial services consultant and worked his way through operations and branch management positions to his current regional management title after 10 years with the credit union.

“So far, the competition for the Next Top Credit Union Exec has been exciting, intense, and a lot of fun,” Walker said. “I’ve been able to interact with some of the other finalists online. Tthey seem like great people, and their passion gives me a lot of hope for the future of the credit union movement. Winning the competition would be incredible and humbling, but I still say the greatest honor for me was being nominated by OSU Federal’s leadership: people who really know me, and have helped me grow over the last 10 years. It’s one thing to impress people in a two-minute video, but it’s another thing for such talented professionals who have known me for years say that they believe in me.”

The other four finalists all come from larger credit unions, including one in Pennsylvania ($3.9 billion), North Carolina ($965 million), Canada ($4.9 billion) and Australia ($4 billion). OSU Federal has a current asset size of approximately $785 million, with more than 73,000 members in five Oregon counties.

Since the competition started in June, 113 young credit union professionals were nominated and 31 then applied with a video. The public voted the Top 15 in and after a rigorous judging process, we now have five Finalists that include three Americans, one Australian and one Canadian! Learn more about the next steps in the competition.

“These five Finalists were selected from a very highly qualified group,” said CUES President and CEO Fred Johnson. “The judging was not easy; we applaud all of the applicants for their hard work to promote their projects, and of course for the great work they are doing at their credit unions. Now, we congratulate the finalists and look forward to learning about their projects’ progress between now and the final presentations at the CEO/Executive Team Network in November.”

Walker currently has several avenues of social media up as per the contest rules, and supporters can help his candidacy by commenting on his Facebook page, his Twitter account (@CreditUnionPete) or his blog. The final online balloting takes place Tuesday, Nov. 6., when CUES will create a video of the finalists’ presentations. Online voting will be available until 5 p.m. PST on that day only. Only one vote per person will be permitted.

CUES is an independent, not-for-profit, international membership association with a mission to educate and develop credit union CEOs, directors and future leaders. CUES conducts an annual search for emerging credit union leaders, looking for young credit union professionals age 35 and under who have not yet reached the CEO level for the “Next Top Exec” challenge.

In Walker’s case, he is addressing his promotion and internal marketing of OSU Federal’s staff internal recognition and award program, called APEX (Achieve Performance Excellence), how it relates to the credit union industry and the OSU Federal culture, values, and passion for member service.
