15 Northwest Credit Unions Already Tabbed for Miracle Jeans Day Participation

On Sept. 12, hundreds of credit unions—including at least 15 from the Northwest that have already registered—will raise money for local Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals in $5 increments by taking part in Miracle Jeans Day.

The concept behind the event is simple: in exchange for a $5 to Credit Unions for Kids, credit union employees earn the right to trade in their traditional work attire for a pair of jeans on Miracle Jeans Day.

But many credit unions are taking the idea a step further, using it as a springboard to raise both money and awareness for Credit Unions for Kids. The Northwest Credit Union Association (NWCUA) has already tabbed Wednesday, Oct. 3, as Miracle Jeans Day at its 2012 Convention and Annual Business Meeting. Convention attendees can register in advance to purchase an exclusive Credit Unions for Kids t-shirt and wear jeans for a day.

“In celebration of Miracle Jeans Day, Oregon Community donates $5 per employee to Children’s Miracle Network,” said Kristi Rysdam, Oregon Community Credit Union’s community marketing specialist. “Staff are encouraged to wear jeans for the day in support of our local CMN hospital. We also get the word out to our members through OCCU’s Facebook page, website and digital signage in all of our branches.”

Katie Jo Powers, education and development specialist at Fibre Federal Credit Union, said that special plans were in the works for the credit union’s participation in Miracle Jeans Day, including some “big ideas for fundraising” that are awaiting input and approval from the executive office.

Northwest Community Credit Union is one of many credit unions taking advantage of the variety of new turnkey promotional materials available this year to help credit unions engage employees, further fundraising efforts and motivate members. New for 2012 are stickers and paper icons, both downloadable for free upon registration. The preprinted icons used in the past are still available as well by contacting a local hospital representative.

According to Jen McFadden, new media assistant manager at Northwest Community, the credit union has creative plans in the works to encourage engagement on a number of levels.

“With the help of the promotional materials on the Miracle Jeans Day website,” McFadden said, “we’ve decided we’re going to send a ‘Save the Date’ e-mail prior to the event with the challenge to each branch and department. We’ll ask them to select a team captain and get ready for an exciting fundraising opportunity. From that point, on we’ll communicate with the team captains to keep it simple. They will create weekly fundraising competitions and goal charts, encourage members to participate, and keep their teams excited about the opportunity to wear jeans.”

McFadden said the branch or department with the most funds raised will be rewarded with a pizza and ice cream party.

“We’re still in the initial planning stages for community participation,” she said. “We’ll definitely be talking about it and encouraging community participation on our new media channels. I’d encourage any credit union looking for participation ideas to check out all the resources available. It’s a pretty exciting event and as always it’s great to partner with Credit Unions for Kids.”

According to Felicity Guerin, Credit Unions for Kids liaison for the American Association of Credit Union Leagues (AACUL), credit union participation is already ahead of last year’s pace.
