Since activating its online disaster relief system CUAid.coop on June 29, the National Credit Union Foundation (NCUF) has already raised more than $25,000 from the credit union community to assist credit union people affected by the wildfires in Colorado.
“It’s reported that the fire is 100% contained now, which is great news,” said Scott Earl, president and CEO of the Mountain West Credit Union Association. “However, there were more than 340 homes destroyed. Many families have been widely affected and will continue to need assistance and support for some time as they piece their community back together. The largest need right now for most organizations helping the evacuees and victims is financial.”
“In a little over a week, we’ve raised over $25,000, with donations ranging from $5 to $5,000,” said Christopher Morris, NCUF director of communications. “That’s pretty impressive coming at a time when many people are on vacation. Credit unions have stepped up yet again to help those in need.”
Credit union supporters in every state can make donations through CUAid, a secure website that accepts credit cards and includes information on wire transfers and mail donations. CUAid is the only program of its kind that enables credit union employees, volunteers and members, as well as credit unions and state credit union foundations across the U.S., to contribute directly to support other people in the credit union system. One hundred percent of the donations through CUAid goes to credit union disaster relief.
As donations are posted through CUAid.coop, the NCUF is coordinating with the Mountain West Credit Union Association to distribute money efficiently to credit union employees and members in the affected areas.
CUAid was developed by the NCUF in 2006 in cooperation with state credit union foundations, state credit union leagues and the Credit Union National Association’s (CUNA’s) Disaster Preparedness Committee.
There continues to be a need for additional financial support for the victims of the Colorado wildfires. Organizations and individuals can use a variety of easily linkable CUAid web buttons for their website, including ones customized for the current fundraising campaign.
