Following the announcement last Friday that the National Credit Union Foundation (NCUF) activated the online disaster relief system CUAid.coop to raise money for credit union people affected by the wildfires in Colorado, the Northwest Credit Union Foundation last approved a $5,000 CUAid Disaster Relief grant to support the effort.
“When disaster strikes, having access to basic financial services is as much of a necessity as having food and shelter,” said Northwest Credit Union Association CEO John Annaloro. “Making sure that the people who provide those services are being assisted and are taken care of while they help fellow victims is vital to helping communities recover.”
Fueled by scorching hot temperatures and winds of up to 40 miles per hour, the Colorado wildfires have so far destroyed 350 homes and forced more than 35,000 people to flee. The record breaking fires are just 40 percent contained, according to reports. At least three people have been confirmed killed.
No administrative costs are taken out meaning that 100 percent of every penny goes to help victims, and dollars collected will help credit union employees, members and volunteers with immediate emergency needs and ongoing needs.
Cuaid.coop is the first national online giving center for credit unions. All cuaid.coop contributions are directed to the National Credit Union Foundation Disaster Relief Fund. As donations are posted through CUAid.coop, NCUF will coordinate with the Mountain West Credit Union Association to distribute money efficiently to credit union employees and members in the affected areas, according to the foundation.
Credit union organizations are encouraged to link to cuaid.coop to offer employees and members a donation option to help fellow credit union employees and members in the disaster area.
CUAid is the only program of its kind that enables credit union employees, volunteers, and members, as well as credit unions and state credit union foundations across the U.S., to contribute directly to support other credit union people.
