Portland, SW Washington Credit Unions Lead Nation in Charitable Giving to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals

Portland, OR (May 24, 2012)—When a small group of Oregon and Southwest Washington credit unions created “Credit Unions for Kids” in 1986, the goal was to improve healthcare for young patients at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.   It worked – so well that the Credit Unions for Kids effort was copied nationally a decade later.

Credit Unions for Kids announced today that it has raised more than $100 million since it started on a national level in 1996.  Credit Unions for Kids is the “charity of choice” in the credit union movement and is the third largest sponsor of the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (CMNH). Funds raised support 170 hospitals and 17 million kids.

“Credit Unions for Kids has a rich history in Oregon and Southwest Washington, and we’re proud of that,” said Pat Smith, CEO of Unitus Community Credit Union, and a member of the Ambassador Advisory Group comprised of credit union CEOs leading local fundraising efforts.  “Fundraising for children’s hospitals is a natural extension of what we do since it directly benefits our members and the communities in which we serve. The Credit Unions for Kids effort helps us help local kids, kids that desperately need our support.”

Smith noted that Portland area credit unions have raised more than $10 million since starting the charity in 1986 – more than any other credit union market in America. Portland area credit unions ranked second in the nation in fundraising last year.

One hundred percent of every dollar donated by members of a credit union community goes back to the CMN Hospital in that community.  In Portland, for example, funds raised for Doernbecher Children’s Hospital and its patients:

  • Completely funded the 7th floor which is named the “Credit Unions for Kids Outpatient Clinic.”
  • Endowed position for the Credit Unions for Kids Chair Physician-in-chief position held by H. Stacy Nicholson, M.D., MPH
  • Funded four pediatric intensive care unit rooms
  • Underwrote one parent kitchen and one exam unit in the cancer center expansion
  • Funded two procedure rooms in the Biomedical Research Building
  • Endowed the Credit Unions for Kids Professorship in Pediatric Neurology held by Thomas K. Koch, M.D
  • Endowed the Credit Unions for Kids professorship in Pediatric Research held by Robert D. Steiner, M.D.

“OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital is honored to have a partner like Credit Unions for Kids supporting the healthcare of children in our region,” said Mary K. Turina, Executive Director of the Doernbecher Children’s Hospital Foundation. “The dedication and advocacy that credit unions show to this cause is a testament to the mission of the credit union movement. We are incredibly grateful for the support of Credit Unions for Kids over the last 26 years and are looking forward to many more milestones.”

Patients and their parents have shared many heartwarming stories of the care they’ve received at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital online.

“2011 was a landmark year for our credit union partners,” said John Lauck, president and CEO of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. “Their performance speaks volumes about the character of those in the movement. Given the unprecedented challenges facing the industry, credit unions could have cut back on their fundraising, but instead they pushed forward to raise $100 million. We congratulate Credit Unions for Kids on this achievement and thank them for enabling our hospitals to impact the lives of more kids and their families.”

In 2012, participating credit unions have three national campaigns supporting local Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. The Change A Child’s Life coin collection campaign concluded April 30. Miracle Jeans Day fundraising will occur Aug. 1 – Sept. 12, and the Holiday icon campaign will run Nov. 1 – Dec. 31.
