Rep. Rick Larsen, the Democratic congressman representing Washington’s Second District, spent time at Whatcom Educational Credit Union (WECU) and North Coast Credit Union Tuesday as part of his visit to Bellingham, Wash, with a focus on job creation in the region.
“When Rick initially contacted us, he was just interested in finding out some more about credit unions,” said Kessa Volland, marketing manager for WECU. “When we talked to him during the visit, his focus while he was up in Bellingham was on jobs and job creation. So, finding out more about the credit union industry, about how Bank Transfer Day had affected us, how our member business lending looked.”
Larsen also toured WECU’s Business and Home Loan Center on Holly Street, one of two LEED gold-certified WECU branches, a status granted to high-performance green buildings based on qualities such as sustainability, water and energy efficiency, building materials, and indoor environmental quality. A third WECU branch recently received silver certification as well.
“I’m very glad to be here today to learn more about the important role credit unions play in our communities,” Larsen said. “Plus, I love your free ATMs!”
Larsen’s visit to Bellingham also included a meeting with women’s health experts and representatives from Mt. Baker Planned Parenthood, a visit to KISM radio and a tour of All-American Marine.
